The cinematography expresses a great deal to do with this argument, and has everything to do with the plotline, which is rare in many films.

I believe there is more to it than simple possession. What was it that drove all the greusome incidents and eventual conclusion of the plot? Was it pathological behaviour or was it supernatural happenings? Was it down to supernatural happenings that caused psychosis? Did they both become possessed by nature, or were they driven to insanity through grief and conflict of interest? I consider the former far too easy. Told in four chapters with a prologue and epilogue, the film details acts of lustful cruelty as the man and woman unfold the darker side of nature outside and within.” To confront her fears they go to stay at their remote cabin in the woods, “Eden”, where something untold happened the previous summer. The mother’s grief consigns her to hospital, but her therapist husband brings her home intent on treating her depression himself. “A couple lose their young son when he falls out of a window while they are having passionate sex in another room. I’ve tried to compartmentalise and dilute my explanation as best as I can in order to produce something actually comprehensible, without getting too lost in my own ramblings and theories that only I know the meaning of. So, without further ado, here I present my personal interpretation of Antichrist. I, as usual, am stuck at a figurative crossroad middle ground between all arguments. Some say that it’s down to representations of today’s modern gender roles in Western society, others argue that it’s down to ancient political and religious views, most (such as the press) have derived the film to be a crude, yet artistic expression of the director’s misogynist views and opinions.

Basically, the whole thing is one huge mindfuck.Īs these kinds of movies tend to do, soon as it finished, I had to research other interpretations and nitpick at the historical facts presented throughout so as to make sense of it and dilute all the remaining questions and conclusions racing around in my mind. Tonight, I watched the whole movie from start to finish and drew from the cinematography and plotline together, as absolutely oozing with symbolism, contextualization, historical representations and comparisons, and every time I analyse and annotate both the plot and the cinematography, whether together or separately, I keep finding more and more layers to the overall product that I must have overlooked – or newly discovered.

This post will make a heck of a lot more sense if you have already seen the film, if you need refreshing, please refer to the synopsis. Especially after just catching the worst parts rather than the whole thing. Only, the first time I watched it, I caught the second half of it and put it down to being an incredibly fucked up movie and nothing more.
